CHICAGO – Senior defensive end Derick Roberson was one of nine player added to the Buck Buchanan Award watch list on Thursday, according to a release from STATS FCS.
Roberson has more than earned his way onto the list, leading the nation with both 13.5 sacks and five forced fumbles this season. In all, he has totaled 56 tackles along with 18 TFL, a blocked kick and a safety in just nine games.
Much of that work has come lately with 14 of his TFL and 11.5 of his sacks coming in the last six games. With his big season, he has helped the Kats rank fourth in the nation in team sacks and fifth in team TFL.
He is also closing in on Andre Finley’s single-season sack record of 15 and also moving into the top 10 all-time on the single-season list in Southland Conference history. The current SLC single-season record for sacks stands at 18.0, set by SFA’s Roderick Stansell in 1989.
The Buchanan Award, presented since 1995 to the top defensive player in FCS, has watch list updates during the season. A national panel of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries will select the winner following the regular season.
Also this season, STATS will present the Walter Payton Award (FCS offensive player of the year), Jerry Rice Award (FCS freshman player of the year), Eddie Robinson Award (FCS coach of the year) and Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
