BEAUMONT – Just days after picking up a big road win, the Sam Houston State Bearkats dropped the following match, 5-2, to Lamar at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
The Bearkats (11-5, 5-2 SLC) dropped the doubles point and despite having the upper hand in doubles play for the majority of the season, surrendered three of the four of the five available singles points.
Lamar (6-11, 3-4 SLC) got wins on both the Nos. 3 and 1 doubles courts to quickly go up 1-0 and then grabbed a stranglehold on the match with victories on both the Nos. 4 and 3 singles courts, going up 3-0.
Amelie Vossgaetter’s straight-set win over Lusine Chobanyan at No. 4 made it a 2-0 match and Sanja Jolic took down Karla De La Luz Montalvo on the No. 3 court to make it 3-0. Roos Gerritsen got the Kats on the board by rebounding to win a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision over Natalia Molina on the No. 5 court and Sahaja Yamalapalli followed with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory over Jasmin Buchta on the No. 1 court to trim the lead down to 3-2.
However, Bianca Vitale responded with the clinching point for the Cardinals at No. 2 singles, taking the third set for a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Isidora Zivkovic. Lamar’s Laura Sola Grau then claimed the match’s final point with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Petra Kaszas on the No. 6 court.
The Bearkats will now return to Huntsville for a pair of big league matches on their home court this week, starting Friday against league-leading Northwestern State at the McAdams Tennis Center.
