PROVO, Utah – A night after taking a set off of one of the top team’s in the nation, the Sam Houston State Bearkats took care of business on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-17) win over LIU in the finale of the BYU Doterra Classic at Smith Fieldhouse.
The Kats (2-4) put an end to a four-match skid with a dominant performance, hitting .322 while holding LIU (0-6) to just .010 hitting for the match.
Catherine Krieger had just one error on 19 swings, putting home a team-high 10 kills to lead the way for SHSU. Kaira Hunnicutt had seven kills, while Breanne Chausse and Samantha Rodgers had six each.
Madilyn Miles needed short work to pick up a double-double, going for 16 assists and 10 digs while Morgan Janda had 14 assists. Addison Miller added 12 digs and Hunnicutt had a hand on four of SHSU’s seven blocks for the match.
For LIU, Kora Schaeberl had a dozen kills, but no other Shark finished with more than four.
The Kats will next head to Jacksonville State for three matches next weekend as part of the Gamecock Classic, beginning Fridy against the host Jacksonville State. They will then take on Mississippi State and Stetson on Saturday in the tournament finale.
