Game Story: Title Bound! Kats Sweep ‘Jacks At SLC Tournament (11/19)

HUNTSVILLE – Few teams were hotter than the Sam Houston State Bearkat volleyball team in the final third of the season, and they carried that momentum into a run to the title match of the Southland Conference Tournament for the first time in 20 years.

The Kats found themselves at just 3-4 in league play nearing the midway point of the slate, but caught fire in their remaining nine matches, winning seven times to surge into Conway, Ark., as the No. 3 overall seed in the tournament.

They closed out the regular season with a 3-1 win at Northwestern State to clinch the third seed, and six days later disposed of the Demons once again by the same score to set up a semifinal matchup with No. 2 Stephen F. Austin, a team the Kats had split with in the regular season.

The Bearkats fell one win short of the title match in 2015, but made sure from the beginning that there would not be a repeat of the previous year. Sam Houston dominated from the outset, hitting a scorching .448 in the opening set and a season-high .376 for the match in sweeping past the Ladyjacks to get to the finals.

In all the Kats finished with 57 kills on 117 swings with just 13 errors in the match while holding SFA to just .167 hitting for the match. Brooke White had 17 kills in the win on her way to being selected to the all-tournament team. Taylor Cunningham was also an all-tournament selection and had 14 kills without an error against SFA, while Jordyn Vaughn added 14 as well.
