CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Sam Houston was unable to slow down Chattanooga’s offense, dropping the opener of the tournament against the host Mocs in straight sets, falling 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-18) on Friday afternoon at Maclellan Gym.
Sam Houston will return to face Murray State on Saturday at 9 a.m. followed by another non-conference test against ULM to close out the Classic.
Sam Houston within reach of Chattanooga (3-2) and never fell behind more than five, but misfired courtesy of six attacking errors in the frame while the Mocs hit .293 on their way to a 25-21 win.
Jordyn Vaughn produced a majority of the Bearkat swings, connecting on five attacks for kills. The Mocs won the battle in digs with 22 which out matched the Bearkats 17. The set went back and forth with the Kats tying up five times. The Mocs eventually finished off the set on a 4-1 run.
The second set became a tight contest as the frame had nine matching scores. The Bearkats battled to a close set starting off with Vaughn leading the team with eight kills. Being down 16-12, Kats fired off as Taylor Cunningham had two kills and an Amy Martin ace tying the frame up again at 17. One of Amanda Gooch’s nine kills provided the Bearkats a 21-19 lead but the Mocs came back and tie the frame up at 21. Soon after a Sam Houston timeout the Mocs finished the set strong going on a 4-1 run win it 25-22.
Similar to the previous set, the frame started off going back and forth till 5-5, where three Bearkat errors put the Mocs up 8-5. From there on the Kats could not get anything going on defense as Chattanooga continued to grow their lead up to 18-11. Chattanooga kept pace as they finished with .259 hitting percentage finishing the set 25-18.
