HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State completed a weekend series sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, their second sweep of the league season, behind three multi-run innings to win 10-5 on Saturday afternoon at Chapman Softball.
Codi Carpenter and Tiffany Thompson combined for six hits and three RBI to lead the Bearkat offense, which had amassed 16 hits among nine different batters. Megan McDonald, Brooke Malia and Bailey White each had multi-hit games and combined for five RBI.
Lindsey McLeod opened with 2.0 innings of work and struck out three batters before handing it off to the freshman duo of Darby Fitzpatrick and Annie Bailey. Bailey carried the bulk of the load entering in the fourth inning and allowed only one run and two hits in 3.2 innings of work to secure the Bearkat win, her fifth of the season.
The Bearkats return home to play in a midweek game on Wednesday against Texas Southern with first pitch starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
White got the party started in the bottom of the first where she blasted a two-RBI double into right field to give the Kats an early 2-0 lead and the Bearkats never looked back from there.
The Islanders responded as a leadoff double into center field would set up Kaylee Hoppens with a RBI single into center field, cutting the lead to 2-1.
Sheridan Fisher shot a leadoff single up the middle, advancing to third on abunt and a passed ball. Carpenter then delviered one of her three hits on the day with an RBI single through the left side to push the Bearkat lead to 3-1.
A three up and three down inning for AMCC in the bottom of the second bridged the gap to the third, an inning which opened with a leadoff single by Thompson. Malia then picked the RBI with a double into the right field. A single and pitching change later, Megan Crosby shot a RBI single into left that was followed up by Fisher’s sacrifice fly which upped the lead to 6-1.
Down five runs, the Islanders needed momentum and they got just that in the fourth. After a ground out, Whitney Wendel doubled, and after a walk Avery Ratcliff brought Wendel in with an RBI double, cutting the lead to 6-2. Things got even closer two batters later when Keagan Helson blasted a three-run homer over the center field wall to cut the lead down to 6-5.
After the big inning for A&M-Corpus Christi, the Kats respond with a four-run inning of their own. A fielder’s choice and Carpenter RBI double added, but the Bearkats did not stop there. McDonald and Thompson followed up Carpenter with two more doubles, plating two more runs before Malia capped the scoring with an RBI single to center field.
