HOUSTON – Sam Houston’s Lusine Chobanyan earned a singles victory over a player from a nationally prominent tennis program for the second time in two matches Sunday afternoon during a 6-1  team loss to the University of Houston at the UH courts.

Chobanyan defeated  Houston's Ana Glumac 6-1 6-2 in the number six singles. Friday evening, the sophomore from Yerevan, Armenia, downed Texas A&M's Ilulia Ivascu. The Aggies finished No. 16 in last year’s Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association final national rankings.

"Lusine came up big again in singles while we had a couple more close ones get away from us," head coach Rob Hubbard said. "We have lots to work on this week as we prepare for our next match."

Another newcomer, Sahaja Yamalapalli, came within two points of a second Bearkat singles win Sunday. Playing number three, the freshman from Hyderabad, India, split sets with Lauren Alter but lost 10-8 in a super tiebreaker. Alter won the first set 6-3. Yamalapalli bounced back for a 6-2 second set victory.

Carrie Casey took Houston’s Allison Mills to a seven-point tiebreaker in the first set at number four singles but lost 7-6 6-3. Fabienne Gettwart, Khee Yen Wee and Mila Milanovic also fell in straight sets in the one, two and five singles contests, respectively.

Chobanyan and freshman Rosalie Gerritson held a 4-2 lead over Houston’s number three doubles team of Ana Glumac and Constandena Nicolaou but the match was stopped after the Cougars clinched the doubles point with victories at numbers one and two.

"We competed extremely hard today against a talented Houston team," Hubbard said. "I was a little disappointed in our doubles performance as we have spent a lot of hours on it. With a little more time I hope we can get it on track soon."

With the victory, Houston remains unbeaten in dual match play with a 3-0 mark. The Cougars’ first two wins also came over Southland Conference schools. UH defeated Lamar and last year's league champion A&M-Corpus Christi by identical 6-1 scores.

Sam Houston will compete a three-match road swing Saturday, Feb. 3, when the Bearkats take on the UTSA Roadrunners in a non-conference contest in San Antonio. Next home action for the tennis team will be Friday, February 9 when the Kats play host to Louisiana Tech at 2:30 p.m. at the McAdams Center.
