HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State volleyball team fought its way back from a 2-0 deficit, but could not hold off a late run from McNeese as the Cowgirls pulled off a 3-2 (25-19, 25-22, 13-25, 22-25, 15-12) upset on Thursday night at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
McNeese (9-13, 2-8 SLC) snapped a six-match losing streak with the win, despite the Kats (11-10, 7-2 SLC) being on the verge of coming back to win after being down 2-0 for the first time since 2017.
The Kats did not hit better than .152 in either of the first two sets before storming out of the halftime locker room to score 37 kills over Sets 3 and 4 and force a fifth set. SHSU kept that rolling and opened up an 8-3 lead before McNeese reeled off 11 of the next 13 points before closing out the match.
Breanne Chausse led the Kats with 18 kills and five blocks, helping SHSU hit .203 for the match. Catherine Krieger added 13 kills and hit .258, while Ashley Lewis had a dozen kills and 10 digs. Morgan Janda just missed a triple-double, adding eight kills to her 33 assists and 14 digs.
Ashleigh Traylor added 19 digs, while Addison Miller led all players with 23 digs. Kaira Hunnicutt led all players with six blocks, adding seven kills on 16 swings.
The Kats will try to rebound on Saturday when they host Nicholls at Johnson Coliseum. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
