HUNTSVILLE- The Sam Houston State track and field team will be sending 16 event qualifiers and one relay to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary Round, which will take place May 23-25 in Sacramento, Calif.
The SHSU men will send 13 event qualifiers and one relay to the west preliminary meet (more than any other team in the conference). The men’s program entries also go into the meet Top 35 in entries across the nation.
Chris Jefferson, the five-time qualifier, will compete in the 100m and 200m dash. The senior, who was named Men’s Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Running Events Performer was the event champion in both events during the SLC Outdoor Championships. He posted a mark of 10.20s in the 100m (ranked 8th) and a mark of 20.48s in the 200m (ranked 7th).
Bryan Henderson, the two-time qualifier will compete in both the 100m and 200m races. The junior posted both marks in the 100m (10.37s) and 200m (20.99s) during the preliminary round during the SLC Outdoor Championships. Henderson is currently ranked 30th in the 100m and 36th in the 200m.
Jo’Vaughn Martin will compete in his first NCAA preliminary competition. The freshman out of Conroe High School was named Freshman of the Year and will run the 200m race. Martin posted a time of 20.51s at the 37th Annual Victor Lopez Classic and is ranked 8th.
Joshua Smith, another first-time qualifier posted a season-best 14.13s in the 110m hurdles during the SLC Outdoor Championships. The junior is ranked 35th.
The men’s 4x100m relay team is ranked 5th with a 39.11s mark posted during the Texas Relays where they took fourth place.
Tyler Adams, another five-time qualifier will compete in the high jump. The senior was the event champion during the SLC Outdoor Championships. He posted a mark of 2.12m (6’ 11.5”) and is ranked 23rd.
Clayton Fritsch will travel out west to compete in the NCAA West Preliminary for the second year in a row. The sophomore out of Sealy comes into the competition ranked fifth in the pole vault. During the ACU Last Chance 2019 meet Fritsch posted a mark of 5.71m (18’ 8.75”).
Saige Revell will make his NCAA West Preliminary debut in the triple jump. A senior from Desoto, he posted a season-best jump of 15.11m (49’ 7”) at the Texas Relays and is ranked 39th.
Michael Nichols will compete in the NCAA West Preliminary for the second time in his collegiate career, having competed in the meet in 2017. The senior out of North Mesquite High School threw for a season-best 18.18m (59’ 7.75”) during the Michael Johnson Invitational where he finished fifth and ranks 34th.
Aaron Akens is in the NCAA West Preliminary for the fourth time in his career. He is ranked 7th in the discus throw, where he placed first in the SLC Outdoor Championships with a throw of 57.10m (187’ 4”). Akens will also compete in the hammer throw. He is ranked sixth with a season-best throw of 68.28m (223’ 11”) posted at the ACU Last Chance Meet 2019.
Joshua Hernandez, the three-time qualifier is ranked 31st in the hammer throw and will compete in the NCAA West Preliminary after a season-best throw of 62.64m (205’ 6”) at the Texas Relays.
The women’s team will bring three athletes with them to Sacramento for the meet.
Halie Daniel will make her NCAA West Preliminary debut in the shot put. The junior is ranked 21st and posted her season-best throw of 16.00m (52’ 6”) during the Houston Alumni Invitational.
Lauryn Caldwell will also make her debut. She will compete in the discus, where she is ranked 31st. Caldwell set her season-best mark during the Michael Johnson Invitational where she threw for 52.50m (172’ 3”).
Yarixza Rivera will compete in the meet for the second time in her collegiate career. She is ranked 45th in the hammer throw and set her season-best mark during the Houston Alumni Invitational with a throw of 57.83m (189’ 9”).
The NCAA Division 1 Outdoor National Championships take place in Austin, TX at Mike A. Myers Stadium June 5-8. Athletes must finish in the top 12 at Sacramento to qualify and represent Sam Houston State on track and field’s biggest stage.
