Jennifer Heinz of Sam Houston State has been named as a first team selection and three other Bearkats earned honorable mention on the 2008 All-Southland Conference women’s golf team announced Thursday.
Members of the honor squad were selected by vote of the Southland’s head coaches and sports information directors.
Heinz was the leader of Sam Houston State’s squad that finished tied for second at the SLC Tournament. The senior shot a 225 at the conference tournament to finish tied for second place. During the regular season, she shot a 76.03 average on 28 rounds and had seven top-10 finishes. She was the individual medalist champion at the Bobcat Invitational in Victoria, the final regular season tournament of the year.
The senior from Mounds View, MN, is a professional golf management major with a 3.52 grade point average. She has played 102 rounds of golf in her four-year college career, the most ever by a Bearkat women’s golfer. Heinz’s four-year stroke average of 79.2 ranks as the third best in school women’s golf history.
Heinz has earned All-Southland Conference each of her four years as a Bearkat. She received honorable mention selection both as a freshman and a sophomore and was a second team selection last year as a junior.
Junior Wendy Joyner of Montgomery, sophomore Landa Stewart of The Woodlands, and senior Ani Carrillo of Guadalajara, Mexico, all received All-SLC honorable mention after strong showings during the 2007-08 season.
Joyner played in all 12 tournaments for the Bearkats this year, producing a 78.3 stroke average. She won the individual title at the Nicholls State tournament and placed 13th in the SLC championship. Carrillo finished 9th at the Southland Conference tournament with a 79-75-74—228 total and was third at the Sam Houston Invitational. Stewart placed sixth in the Southland event (73-78-76—228) and placed in the top 20 in six regular season tournaments.
Central Arkansas’ Nicole Forshner received the SLC’s award as the league’s Player of the Year. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Ashley Watkins was voted Newcomer of the Year .Linn Gustafsson of Texas State earned recognition as Freshman of the Year.Texas State-San Marcos coach Mike Akers was recognized as the conference’s top coach.
