HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats will kick off their final homestand of the season on Wednesday when they host Central Arkansas at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The game can be watched on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. Matt Pedersen and Paul Baxter will have the Valentine’s Day call with the game set to start at 6:30p.m. Live stats are available via Statbroadcast and fans can also get updates as they happen by following @BearkatsWBB on Twitter.
Despite not qualifying for the Southland Conference Tournament in Katy next week, the final week of the regular season poses a grand opportunity for the Bearkats with two of the league's top squads remaining on the schedule. The Kats will close out their season with not only Central Arkansas on Wednesday, but also against Stephen F. Austin on Satruday. Each of those teams rank in the top three in the league standings.
The Bearkats have had a dynamic duo in the frontcourt this season thanks to the play of Lydia Baxter and Kiera McKinney. Baxter, who has a team-high three double-doubles, is the team’s second-leading scorer averaging 9.0 points per contest to go along with 7.4 rebounds. Her partner in the paint McKinney has come on as of late to average 6.8 points a contest along with 5.7 rebounds after putting up a game-high 14 points last time the Bearkats took the floor.
Central Arkansas has won three of their past Southland contests to boast an impressive 12-4 conference record to firmly place them in the top three Southland squads with two more games to go. The Sugar Bears are led by senior Taylor Baudoin who averages 15.5 points per game, the fifth highest mark in the Southland.
Baudoin is joined by Kamry Orr, who averages 12.5 points per game, and Kierra Jordan who averages 11.1 points a contest to form the trio to lead the Sugar Bears. All three Sugar Bears are top-20 scorers in the Southland Conference.
But their signature has been defense this season. The Sugar Bears allow an average of 50.0 points per game, a mark that ranks second among all teams in the NCAA.
SERIES vs CENTRAL ARKANSAS
The Kats will be looking to snap an nine-game skid against the Sugar Bears. UCA owns a 10-3 advantage in the series with the last Sam Houston win coming in Huntsville during the 2012-13 season. The last time the squads squared off in January the Sugar Bears protected their home floor with a 25-point victory, the Kats were led by Jennifer Oramas and Akarian Morgan who scored 14 points each.
