HUNTSVILLE - Sam Houston State struggled to get anything going offensively in a 2-0 loss to North Texas in a nonconference matchup at Bearkats Softball Complex Wednesday.
Mean Green pitcher Hope Trautwein (14-4) was lights out in the circle, holding the Bearkats (16-19) hitless on the evening. She did issue three walks, one to senior Ashley Goetz in the fifth and the seventh and the other to junior Hunter Ervin in the sixth.
Sam Houston also had pinch hitter Kyndal Kutac reach on an error with a runner on the seventh, but Trautwein got a popup to first to end it.
Junior Karina Sanchez (1-4) took the loss for the Kats. She gave up an RBI single in the top of the first, which proved to be all North Texas (22-10) needed. The Mean Green added an insurance run in the seventh off reliever Regan Dunn, who struck out the first five batters she faced when she entered the game with one out in the fifth.
The Bearkats return to Southland Conference action this weekend. Sam Houston will host Houston Baptist in a three-game set, beginning with a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m. The finale is scheduled for Saturday at noon.
