HUNTSVILLE - The Sam Houston State track team will travel to Houston on Friday to participate in the Howie Ryan Invite. The meet will be a one-day event, and the competition will take place at the Yeoman Fieldhouse on the University of Houston’s campus.
The men’s team is currently ranked 32nd per the NCAA D-1 Men’s Indoor Track & Field Index. The Bearkats slid four spots but remain the highest ranked team in the Southland Conference. The team ranks eighth in the South Central region, which is also the highest rank in the region for a Southland school.
The women’s team is trending upward within the region. They rank 16th out of 36 teams in the region, which is three spots higher than their previous ranking.
SHSU is coming off a week that saw some stellar individual performances. School records were shattered at the Texas Tech Open by sprinters Chris Jefferson and Jo’vaugn Martin. Both Jefferson and Martin moved into the first and second spot all-time for the 200-meter dash.
Jefferson broke more than one record as he recorded a time of 6.65 in the 60-meter dash.
A few athletes for the women’s side to keep an eye on are Baylee Lara and Tristyn Allen. Lara hit a personal-best in the 60-meter hurdle a week ago and Allen as it stands today would qualify for nationals in the triple jump.
