HUNTSVILLE – After the second week of the outdoor track and field season the SHSU men’s track and field team currently holds the No. 32 spot in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) second-week rankings. The ranking is a one spot drop for the program.
The ranking is still an impressive jump from the teams preseason ranking of No. 66, and while the Bearkats moved down one spot on the national level, they made a move up from No. 8 to No. 7 in the South-Central Region. In comparison to conference rivals, the men’s team stands 37.08 points ahead of the next closest team in the Southland Conference, Stephen F. Austin.
Jo’vaughn Martin and Chris Jefferson are ranked No. 6 and No. 13 nationally in the 100-meter dash. Martin (10.17) and Jefferson (10.25) recorded their marks during the Texas Relays on March 27. Martin is also ranked fourth in the nation for his 20.51 mark during the Victor Lopez Classic.
Other notable performances on the season:
-Fabian McCall: No. 40 in the nation for his best mark in the 110-meter hurdles (14.08).
-4x100 Relay (Men’s): No. 5 in the nation for their best mark (39.11).
-Clayton Fritsch: No. 5 in the nation for his best mark in the pole vault (5.51m).
-Aaron Akens: No. 38 in the nation for his best mark in the hammer throw (63.33m).
-Halie Daniel: No. 27 in the nation for her best mark in the shot put (16.00m).
Both the men and women will be competing this coming weekend for the Aggie Alumni Muster in College Station. The Bearkats will look to see similar team success after a second-place finish for the men and third place finish for the women during last weekend’s competition in Houston.
