MAGNOLIA -- The Bearkat women defended their home turf on Tuesday, taking the title at the Bearkat Invitational played at High Meadow Ranch Golf Club in Magnolia.
The Kats shot a 295 (7-over) for the final round and held off a hard-charging Lamar which shot even for the day. The Bearkats finished 13-over for the tournament, winning by seven shots in the 14-team event.
“I’m really proud of the way the girls played today,” said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “This was pretty much a conference field and they were able to put it together and win.”
Hanna Alberto led the way for the Bearkats, finishing in a tie for second with Eva Martinez of Lamar at 1-under for the tournament. Kaity Cummings from HBU won the individual medalist honors with a 3-under, 54-hole score.
“I felt like I left a few shots out there and I know I could have done better, but we got the win as a team and I’m really happy about that,” Alberto said. “We have been working hard and trying to improve and I think our putting helped us out a lot.”
Jenna Phillips had the low round of the day, shooting a 4-under 68 to move into a tie for 4th. She climbed eight spots on the final day. Phillips saved her best for last, recording four birdies in her final 10 holes.
Kenlie Barrett and Tory Gatling each posted top-10 finishes as well. Barrett shot a 77 on Tuesday to finish fourth. Gatling birdied her final hole of the day to move to 10thoverall. Kari Bush finished 40thfollowing a 76 on Tuesday.
