Dax Swanson of Sam Houston State has been voted as Southland Conference "Defensive Player of the Week" following the Bearkats' 38-9 victory at Southeastern Louisiana last Saturday.

Swanson picked up two more interceptions in Hammond Louisiana to run his season total to seven. His seven interceptions tie the Sam Houston school record for most interceptions in one season.

Allen Boren set the record in 1954 and Billy Anderson was the first to tie it in 1987. Combined with Swanson's two interceptions in 2010, the junior cornerback from Waco / LaVega  now has a career total of 10 interceptions. That ranks Swanson tied for fifth place in Sam Houston career picks with Charles Boyce (1988-91). Ronnie Choate (1955-59) holds the Bearkat career record with 13.

Swanson has picked off four passes in his last two games. His .78 interceptions per game is tied for second in the Football Championship Subdivision.

Swanson's first interception of Saturday's game set up Sam Houston touchdown. Sam Houston State clinched at least a share of the conference championship and locked up the league's automatic bid into the Division I playoffs.

The award for Swanson Monday brings Sam Houston's season total of "Player of the Week" honors to seven. Offensive award wins for the 9-0 Bearkats have been Richard Sincere (Central Arkansas and SFA), and Tim Flanders (New Mexico). Defensive winners have been Darius Taylor (SFA) and Darnell Taylor (Central Arkansas). Special teams honors have gone to Matt Foster (SFA).
