Kayla Anderson scored twice, seven other Bearkats each tallied a goal and redshirt freshman goalkeeper Mallory Garthwaite picked up her first collegiate shut out as Sam Houston State defeated Texas Southern a 9-0 in a non-conference women's soccer match Sunday at Pritchett Field.

Sam Houston (3-5) bombarded the Texas Southern defense with 46 shots. Tiger goalkeeper Rebecca Hajny chalked up 15 saves.

Anderson opened the scoring at the 17:59 mark, heading in a cornerkick from Gayle Ziegler.

Emily Edenstrom, Jessica Toms and Kaitlyn Stowe scored in the 24th, 30th and 31st minutes to give Sam Houston a 4-0 lead at halftime.

Tricia Mallory, Sam Houston's leading scorer this season, opened the second half with a goal on a pass from Toms in the 50th minute. Anderson added her second goal of the day in 57th minute.

Jordan Sickman, Megan Manis and Amanda Biega rounded out the scoring with goals in the 71st, 88th and 89th minutes.

The contest was Sam Houston's first home game in three weeks as the Kats ended a five-match road swing. The Bearkats return to Pritchett Field Friday to host the UTEP Miners.

Prior to the contest Friday, Sam Houston will hold a special pre-match tailgate at Joseph Pritchett Field with free McKenzie's Barbeque for the first 100 students.
