For the second straight match, the Sam Houston State soccer team dropped a heart breaker in the closing moments of the game, falling to North Texas 1-0 in double overtime on Friday night.

Carly McDowell netted the game winner in the 108th minute, just two minutes ahead of full time. Michelle Young assisted on the goal that handed the Kats their second loss of the season.

The Kats had a chance to win at the end of regulation when freshman Ashley Alonzo pushed the ball wide on an empty net with just seconds left on the clock.

Each team had one other good goal scoring opportunity in regulation. In the first half, Tricia Mallory missed a header wide for the Kats. At the start of the second half, North Texas’ Amber Haggerty hit the cross bar.

It is the second straight game the Kats have lost in the closing moments, after falling 1-0 to Texas State with five minutes left to play on Sunday.

The Kats now stand at 1-2 on the season.

The will head on the road Sunday to take on Texas Southern at 7 p.m.
