Saint Mary's University of Moraga, Calif., defeated Sam Houston State 1-0 in the first contest at the Texas A&M Women's Soccer Invitational in College Station.

The game was interrupted by a lightning delay.

Christina Tognetti scored the contest's only goal in the 24th minute on a pass from Celina Minissian.

Sam Houston freshman goalkeeper totaled five saves while facing 20 shots.

Shelby McDaniel, Katie Ferrera, Tricia Mallory, Miariah Titua and Paige Rodriguez each had a shot for the Bearkats. SHSU dropped to 2-3 for the year.

Ferrara's rocket off the cross bar late in the contest almost forced overtime.

Sam Houston will take on another nationally ranked opponent Sunday at 10:30 a.m. when the Bearkats face No. 16 ranked Rutgers. The match pits SHSU against the highest nationally ranked opponent in the program's 10-year history.
