HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State soccer (1-0) team kicked off the 2018 season with a bang thanks to a 2-0 shutout over the Utah State Aggies (0-1), Thursday evening at Pritchett Field.

“I am very proud of the team for getting a win tonight,” head coach Tom Brown said. “We beat a good Utah State team and the two goals from set pieces were very important tonight. We will be able to learn from some things and improve for our next match.”

Off to a slow start, the Bearkats and Aggies were both held silent in the first half. Utah State broke open the shot count with a scorcher in the eighth minute, but senior goalkeeper Christina Hendershot made the grab to keep the Aggies off the board.

Hendershot, who posted three shutouts in 2017, held the Aggies scoreless through a full 90 minutes on pitch. She raked in a total of seven saves, which was just one shy of her SHSU career, single-game mark.

Four minutes into the second half, senior Bailey Strong sent a ball into the box and sophomore Sammi Mayock sunk the Kats’ first goal of the season on a header to put SHSU up 1-0. Utah State tried to even up the score in the 61st minute, but Hendershot was in perfect position to make the save.

Keeping the pressure on the Aggie defense, SHSU fired off seven more shots before senior Linsey Bienski upped the score, 2-0, on a rebounded shot just three yards in front of the goal at the 82-minute mark.

Hendershot went on to make her final save of the night in the 86th minute and the Kats held off Utah State for a 2-0 victory.
