HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State soccer team (1-1-1) put up a fight, but a pair of second-half goals from the Toreros proved to be too much in the Bearkats’ 2-0 loss to San Diego (1-1-1), Friday night at Pritchett Field.
The match was quiet until USD registered the first shot of the contest in the third minute of play. USD’s Summer Mason scorched a shot, but senior goalkeeper Christina Hendershot (1-1-1) raked it in for her first of six saves on the night.
Sammi Mayock responded with a shot of her own one minute later, but her header flew just right of the goal. SHSU kept the pressure on the Torero defense as senior Meredith Carlson and sophomore Courtney Pawlik each fired off shots of their own, but neither attempts made it into the net.
At the 19-minute mark, junior forward Katy Johnson dribbled her way into the box and drew a key foul to give SHSU a major scoring opportunity. Carlson lined up to take the penalty kick, but her attempt to give SHSU an early lead went straight into the hands of USD goalkeeper Amber Michel.
SHSU registered four more shots in the remainder of the first half, but both teams entered the break scoreless.

Despite SHSU’s best efforts to even up the match, USD went up 2-0 in the 86th minute after Moses dribbled past her Bearkat defender and sunk a shot in the top right corner of the goal.
SHSU tried to conjure up a goal in the remaining four minutes but fell 2-0 to San Diego. With the loss, Hendershot and the Bearkats fell to 1-1-1 on the season.
