CONWAY, Ark. – Senior Meredith Carlson led the Sam Houston State soccer team (1-6-1, 0-1-0 SLC) with three shots and two shots on goal, but an offensive explosion by the Central Arkansas Bears led to the Bearkats’ 5-0 loss, Friday evening at Bill Stephens Track/Soccer Complex.
Junior Carlota Suarez Crespo registered the Kats’ first shot of the match in the 15th minute but her attempt went straight into the hands of UCA goalkeeper Lauren Mercuri. After senior goalkeeper Christina Hendershot recorded her first of four saves of the night, UCA’s Connie Awuku-Darkoh snuck a shot through the right side in the 18th minute to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead.
SHSU fired off five more shots in the first half, but none of the Kats’ attempts found the back of the net.
UCA made it 2-0 right out of the gates as Anika Sultan sunk a shot into the left side of the net just 20 seconds into the start of the second half. Two minutes later, Awuku-Darkoh found the back of the net on a three-yard shot to put the Bears up, 3-0. The Bears scored once more in the 50th minute after Sultan scored off a free kick from the left side, giving the Bears a 4-0 advantage.
Freshman Abby DeLozier came in for Hendershot following the goal and she picked up back-to-back saves on UCA shot attempts.
The Kats’ best scoring opportunity of the night came in the 64th when an SHSU forward was taken down inside the box. Sophomore Courtney Pawlik unleashed a penalty kick, but UCA’s keeper stepped up to make the save.
UCA’s final goal of the night came on a penalty kick in the 68th minute.
With the loss, Hendershot and the Bearkats fall to 1-6-1 on the season and 0-1-0 in Southland Conference play.
