HUNTSVILLE - The Sam Houston State women’s soccer team scored three quick goals in the first half and never looked back en route to a 5-0 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Friday evening at Pritchett Field.

The Bearkats (1-3-0) came out firing with those three goals all coming in the first 30 minutes of the opening half. Senior Carlota Suarez-Crespo led SHSU with her first two goals of the season.

Freshman Brooke Jones got Sam Houston State on the board in the 11th minute with her first goal of the season. She dribbled through defenders, then launched a shot from the top of the box that sailed past the goalkeeper into the right side of the net.

Junior Courtney Pawlik followed suit with her first goal of the season three minutes last. She popped a penalty kick from the top of the box over the goalkeeper’s head to make it 2-0.

Pawlik then helped assist Suarez-Crespo’s first goal in the 24th minute. Suarez-Crespo punched a shot from the top of the box just left of the goalkeeper in the center of the net.

Suarez-Crespo lit the scoreboard up again in the second half. Sophomore Caitlyn McDonald passed a penalty kick to Pawlik and she crossed the ball into the box to Suarez-Crespo, who scored on a volley with her foot in the 60th minute.

The Bearkats final goal came off a sliding kick by senior Katy Johnson, her first of the season, courtesy of an assist from freshman Alyssa Austin in the 77th minute.

Sam Houston State’s defense was outstanding. The Bearkats held Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-4-0) to only three shots, all of which resulted in saves by SHSU goalkeeper Abby DeLozier.

The Bearkats return to action Sunday when they host the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns at 1 p.m.
