ABILENE - The Sam Houston State soccer team left it all on the field Sunday but once again come up short in a 1-0 loss to Abilene Christian at Elmer Gray Stadium.

The Bearkats fell to 5-4-1 in Southland Conference action and 7-9-1 overall after losing by one goal for the second straight match. Sam Houston State opened this weekend road trip with a hard-fought 3-2 setback in double overtime at Incarnate Word in San Antonio.

The Wildcats (11-4-2, 7-2-1 in SLC) broke the scoreless tie 10 minutes into the second half when Christina Arteaga scored of an assist from Emily Heidman for what would prove to be the match winner. ACU also won 1-0 in double overtime against Stephen F. Austin, which the Bearkats will face in the regular-season finale Friday at Pritchett Field, on Oct. 25.

Freshman goalkeeper Tatum Krueger did her best to keep the Wildcats off the board. She finished with eight saves on 10 shots on goal.

Sam Houston State had six shots on goal Sunday with junior Briana Woodall and senior Carlota Suarez Crespo each recording two, but ACU keeper Rachel Johnson was able to not let anything get past her.

The Bearkats have already secured a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament which will take place Nov. 6-10 in Conway, Arkansas.
