HUNTSVILLE - The Sam Houston State soccer team had plenty of opportunities but could not catch a break in a 2-1 loss to Stephen F. Austin in the regular-season finale Friday evening at Pritchett Field.

The Bearkats will be the seventh seed in the Southland Conference Tournament next week in Conway, Arkansas. Sam Houston State (7-10-1 overall, 5-5-1 in SLC) will play second-seeded Northwestern State (11-7-1, 8-2-1 SLC) Wednesday at 11 a.m.

The Bearkats could have finished as the sixth seed with a win over the Lady Jacks (8-10-0, 5-6-0). Despite outshooting SFA 19-2 with seven shots on goal, Sam Houston State only managed a goal on a penalty kick by freshman Kalynn Bickford, her team-leading fifth of the season, in the 78th minute.

The Ladyjacks took full advantage of their only two shots. Katelyn Termini scored in the fourth minute and Elise Davis made it 2-0 with a goal in the 61st minute in the second half.

The Bearkats paid tribute to their six seniors Katy Johnson, Hannah Dupin, Carlota Suarez Crespo, Lexi Bullard, Acacia Shepardson and Josee Jacobellis before kickoff.

In a touching gesture that drew a standing ovation, Johnson, who suffered a season-ending injury last weekend, walked out on the field and kicked off. The ball was purposely kicked out of bounds so Johnson could leave the field as Brooke Jones came into replace her to let the senior get the start in her final match.
