Former Sam Houston State graduate Chris Cralle placed second in the men's hammer throw at the United States Olympic Track and Field Trials in Beaverton, Ore., Thursday.

The Bearkat All-American and three-time Southland Conference hammer champion produced a throw of 243 feet, 11 inches to finish as runner-up to Kibwe Johnson. The winning mark by Johnson was 245 feet, 11 inches.

Unfortunately, Cralle's throw was short of the Olympic standard necessary to earn one of the spots on the USA team for London next month.

"It was a great day," Cralle said. "I was able to throw my best throw twice and meet the Olympic B standard. But I did not get the A standard so I won't be going to the Olympics this time."

Johnson and A.G. Kruger, who finished third at the trails will represent the USA in the 2012 Summer Games.

"Hopefully, in the next couple of years, I can hit that A standard," Cralle said. "This was a great experience. I believe if I can compete well with these guys, I can compete with anybody."

Cralle became the third Sam Houston State men's competitor to earn NCAA Division I All-America honors in 2011 with a seventh-place finish at the national championship meet. He won the Southland hammer title in 2008, 2009 and 2011. An outstanding student as well, Cralle was named as Southland Conference "Student-Athlete of the Year" in both indoor and outdoor track in 2011.

"I want to thank my parents and my coaches at Sam Houston as well as Andy Fryman and Jon Tipton," he said. "If not for those people, I wouldn't be anywhere close to here. I wouldn't still be throwing and I sure wouldn't be throwing at this level."
