Led by the Bearkats' gold medal 4x400 relay team of Trey Jones, Brian Hellaire, Jesse Martinez and D. J. Hayes, Sam Houston State's men's track and field team finished fourth at the Southland Conference championships in San Marcos.
Hayes also was the runner-up in the 400 meter dash after posting the top preliminary time of 46.77 in the event. Charles White was second in the triple jump (50' 10.25"). Matt Viverette was the runner-up in the 110 meter hurdles (13.93)
Third place medalists for the Bearkats included Preston Sanders in the shotput (57' 1.5"), Trevor Sealy in the hammer (185' 11"), Karique Stephene in the triple jump (50' 5.25".
Henry Jordan, Hayes, Matt Buegeler, and Jarrick Wright combined for a third place finish in the 4x100 relay (40.29).
The top three finishers in each event earn all-conference honors. All event winners earn first-team honors, all runnersup earn second-team honors and all third-place finishers earn third-team honors.
