ABILENE/HOUSTON - The Sam Houston State Bearkats kicked off their Outdoor Track & Field season on Thursday, March 14. The program had athletes participate in both the ACU Spring Break Invitational and the TSU Relays.

 

Senior Aaron Akens set career bests in the disk throw and hammer throw. His best launch in the hammer throw was 62.90m, good for second in the event. In the disk throw Akens topped out at 55.22m.

 

Michael Nichols, the senior from Mesquite, Texas placed third in the shot put. He threw for a mark of 17.40m. That mark is the second-best throw of his collegiate career.

 

After a very impressive indoor season that resulted in Southland Freshman of the Year honors Jo’vaughn Martin came out strong. Martin took first place honors in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash. He finished the race with a time of 10.25 seconds.

 

The Bearkats wrapped up a successful indoor season that culminated in a conference title for the men’s team and three national qualifiers. The program will look for comparable success as the outdoor season picks up momentum.

 

Next up for the Bearkats is a trip back to Houston, Texas for the Victor Lopez Invitational. The meet will begin on Friday, March 22 and will run through Saturday.
