Softball sweeps doubleheader

Third baseman Shelbi Tucker accounted for seven RBIs in a pair of victories as the Sam Houston softball team swept Houston Baptist in a pair of softball games Wednesday.

The Bearkats defeated HBU 5-0 and 6-3 in Houston.

In the first game, Tucker accounted for three insurance runs in the top of the final inning with a three-run triple. Cecillia Castillo gave the Kats a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the top of the first.

Tomi Garrison picked up her second victory of the season in the circle with a complete seven-inning performance. The senior right-hander gave up only three hits. Only the Houston Baptist runners reached second base in the shutout.

Tucker continued her hot streak in the second game with a three-run home run in the first inning. She added her seventh RBI on a sacrifice fly in the second inning. Sarah Allison completed the scoring with a two-run double in the third inning.

Sophomore Shelbi Lancaster was the winning pitcher, spreading seven hits over six innings. Meme Quinn completed the final inning.

Sam Houston State will open Southland Conference action this weekend, hosting Northwestern State in a pair of games at the Bearkat Softball Complete Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
