The Bearkats extended their softball winning streak to five games as they swept through a rare tripleheader Wednesday to improved to 6-13 this season.

Sam Houston first defeated Liberty 3-0, then after a short break, the Bearkats beat the University at Buffalo Bulls 5-1 and 7-4.

"I didn't know what I would be getting into or what I wouldn't be getting into. Now that it's over with, I like it," Bearkats coach Bob Brock said. "I really was happy with the performance and I feel good about today."

In the first game, first baseman Kim Damian led off the bottom of first inning with an opposite-field home run. The home run was her fifth of the season.

The Kats increased their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning to 3-0 when shortstop Sarah Allison cranked a two-run homer over the left-field fence. Third baseman Shelbi Tucker led off the inning with a single and scored on the home run by Allison.

Starting pitcher Tomi Garrison dominated the Libety hitters, allowing only one hit while notching her third win of the season. She struck out five Flames and walked only one.

The Bearkats continued their winning ways against the Buffalo Bulls.

After Buffalo struck first in the top of the second on a RBI double by second baseman Andi Saucier, the Bearkats answered when right fielder Erin Burford hit a towering, two-run home run over the left-field fence in the bottom of the second inning that made it 2-1.

"It was very important to get us the lead," Burford said.

The Bulls had an opportunity to tie the game in the top of the fourth when right fielder Kristin Waldron lined a single over the head of reliever Shelby Lancaster. Second baseman Andi Saucier followed with a walk to put the tying run in scoring position.

However, Lancaster got designated hitter Rebecca Griswold to ground out to end the threat.

The Bearkats put the game out of reach when they exploded for three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Allison blasted a two-run homer over the scoreboard, then Shelbi Tucker followed with a solo home run to make it 5-1.

Center fielder Tori Benavidez doubled with two outs in the inning and scored on Allison's HR.

"I was real focused," Allison said. "I was swinging as hard as I could and it felt good."

Lancaster pitched 6 1/3 shutout innings in relief and got the win.

The Bearkats finished a long day in style, rallying again to beat Buffalo 7-4.

The Bulls scored in the top of the first when catcher Ashlee Isbell tried to throw out Alyssa Ward at second base. The throw sailed to the center-field fence and allowed Ward to score.

Isbell redeemed herself in the bottom of the second when she blasted a two-run homer over the left-field fence to give the Bearkats a 2-1 lead.

The Bearkats added four more runs in the bottom of the third to increase the lead to 6-1, then added one more in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-1 on a solo home run by Erin Martin.

Starting pitcher Meme Quinn went five innings and got the win. She gave up three runs on four hits.

Garrison threw the final two innings in relief.

"I think that both games were good battles," Bulls head coach Jennifer Teague said. "We scored early in both games and we let down until the later part of the games."

The Bearkats will take their momentum on the road as they will open Southland Conference play on Friday and Saturday when they face Nicholls State in Thibodeaux, La.
