The loss gave the Bearkats and the Cowgirls a Southland Conference split in the two-game series. McNeese State now stands 25-11 for the year and 8-2 in Southland Conference while Sam Houston drops to 18-17 overall and 8-4 in league play
Sam Houston scored two runs in the top of the second inning. Third baseman Shelbi Tucker singled and later tallied on a RBI hit by second baseman Allysa Coggins. Catcher Ashley Isbell scored on an error to give the Bearkats a 2-1 lead. But the Cowgirls added a run in the bottom of the second, then five more in the fourth inning and two in the sixth.
A ground ball by Tucker scored Jessica Slater for Sam Houston's final run in the top of the seventh.
Sam Houston will take on Prairie View A&M in a non-conference doubleheader at Prairie View Tuesday afternoon. The event will be the next opportunity for SHSU head coach to pick up his 1,000th career victory. Brock has coached 27 years at Sam Houston, Texas A&M and Baylor. He will be the 22nd NCAA Division I softball coach to achieve the 1,000 victory plateau.
