Central Arkansas pitcher Cami Newsome spread five hits over six innings as the Bears shut out Sam Houston 6-0 Saturday to take both games in a Southland Conference softball series this weekend in Conway.

Newsome (9-2) struck out four Bearkat batters while facing 26 hitters. UCA upped its season mark to 24-10 for the year and 4-0 in Southland Conference play.

Kim Damian, Tori Benavidez, Sarah Allison, Shelbi Tucker and Cecilia Castillo each had one hit for the Bearkats as Sam Houston dropped to 8-15 for the season and 2-2 in Southland action.

A bases loaded walk gave UCA its first run in the bottom of the first inning. The Bears scored three runs on four hits in the second and added two insurance runs in the six inning.

Shelby Lancaster (3-5) was the losing pitcher for Sam Houston. Meme Quinn pitched in the final inning in relief.

Sam Houston State's next softball action is a Southland Conference doubleheader Tuesday with Stephen F. Austin at the Bearkat Softball complex. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
