Sam Houston's streak of shutouts ended but the team's home run power continued as the Bearkats took 1-0 and 8-2 victories in a Southland Conference softball doubleheader against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tuesday.

Shelbi Tucker, Kim Damian and Hillary Adams each homered to bring Sam Houston's season home run total to 45, tops in the Southland and an SHSU season record. The old record was 39 in 2006.

With the doubleheader sweep, Sam Houston takes sole possession of second place in the Southland Conference with an 12-4 league mark. Sam Houston has now won 23 of its last 27 games (since starting the year 1-13) and now stand 23-17 on the year.

The Islanders began the day tied for second with the Kats with a six game Southland winning streak but dropped to 10-6 in league action and 16-18 for the year.

Senior right-hander Tomi Garrison notched Sam Houston's fifth shutout in a row in a 1-0 victory in the opening game. Garrison spread nine hits over seven innings with five strike outs and outstanding defensive play behind her.

A two-out RBI single by second baseman Alyssa Coggins put the Bearkats on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Catcher Ashley Isbell walked, reached  third on a wild pitch and an error before scoring on Coggins' hit.

Right fielder Erin Burford strong-armed a throw from right field on a single by TAMUCC third baseman Cassie Carroll to throw pinch runner Alejia Cain at home to save a run in the top of the sixth inning. The Islanders had runners at first and second in the final inning but the final batter grounded out to Garrison.

The Islanders left 10 runners stranded as Garrison upped her season record to 9-8.

Sam Houston's three home run leaders each added to their totals as Sam Houston started the second game by jumping out to a 6-0 lead.

Tucker, the Southland's home run leader hit a three-run shot for her 10th home run of the season in the first inning. Damian picked up with nine homer of the year with a two-run shot in the second.

A&M-Corpus Christi ended Sam Houston's streak of innings without giving up a run at 43 as catcher Mickayla Heller reached base on an error and scored on a ground out in the third inning.  Heller added another run with an RBI single in the fourth.

Adams parked her eighth home run of the season and Burford added an RBI single in the fifth inning.

Shelby Lancaster (10-6) was the winning pitcher in the nightcap.

Sam Houston State has four games remaining in regular season Southland Conference action. The Bearkats travel to UT-Arlington for games Friday and Saturday, then ends the regular season Friday and Saturday May 3-4 against league-leading Texas State.
