WACO – The Sam Houston State Bearkats took on Southern Miss twice on Saturday at the Getterman Classic, dropping the first game before taking the second to advance to Sunday's tournament championship.

The Kats will go after the tournament title against UTA at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday after the Lady Mavs upset No. 16 Baylor on Saturday afternoon. Sam Houston knocked off UTA in a 4-3 walk-off on Friday.

Game 1
Sam Houston State 1, Southern Miss 2 (Box Score)
Sam Houston struggled offensively, only notching four hits over the course of the game and striking out four times against USM’s pitcher Makenna Pierce. Sam Houston’s Lindsey McLeod (1-3) was in the circle for the Kats, striking out three with six hits and walking four.

The lone run for the Kats came in the top of the sixth inning on a walk that was issued to right fielder Sheridan Fisher. Fisher would wind up scoring from a fielder’s choice to second base. McDonald, Thompson, White and Canada all had hits in the game.

Game 2
Sam Houston State 3, Southern Miss 2 (Box Score)
In the evening game of the series, the Kats were able to strike first and maintain their one run lead in the seventh. Junior pitcher Karina Sanchez tossed 3.2 solid innings for the Kats, but would be taken out of the game after USM tied the ball game 2-2 off a single down the left field line. Freshman pitcher Regan Dunn came in and finished the game for the Kats, striking out three and collecting no hits.

Offensively, Sam Houston scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning, with the highlights being a Brooke Malia single and an Alexandra Diaz double. Southern Miss was quick to even it back up though, tying it in the bottom of the fourth with a couple of singles and a double.

The ball game wouldn’t be tied for long though before freshman third baseman Kyndal Kutac homered to left center, her third on the season thus far. Kutac’s homer would be enough of a lead and the Kats hung on to win 3-2.
