Junior Megan McDonald’s triple in the top of the seventh inning secured a Southland Conference softball series victory for Sam Houston State on the road at Nicholls Saturday.
The Bearkats (16-18, 8-4 in SLC) overcame a two-run fourth inning by the Colonels (16-16, 6-3) to remain tied for second in league action. Senior Lindsey McLeod pitched a perfect bottom of the seventh to improve to 10-7 in the circle.
Sam Houston State jumped on Nicholls right out of the gate to take a 3-0 lead in the first. McDonald led off with a single and sophomore Bailey White later walked. With two outs, senior Ashley Goetz blasted a pitch from reigning SLC Pitcher of the Year Megan Landry over the fence in left.
The Colonels got a run in the second on a sacrifice fly and two more in the fourth inning to tie it when they loaded the bases with no outs. McLeod was able to get out of the jam without giving up the lead.
Junior Taylar Fuselier singled to left center field to get the Bearkats started in the seventh. Pinch runner Kayte Martinez advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kyndal Kutac. With two outs, McDonald laced a triple down the left-field line to put Sam Houston State back on top.
The Bearkats return to action Wednesday when they host North Texas at 6:30 p.m.
