SHSU 6, UIW 4

Sam Houston State held off a late rally by Incarnate Word to take game one of a three-game Southland Conference series 6-4 at Cardinals Stadium Friday.

Junior Megan McDonald, who doubled and scored on an error in the first, picked a great time to launch her first home run of the season to help the Bearkats open the game up in the second inning. Sophomore Sheridan Fisher and junior Taylar Fuselier both singled to start the inning and McDonald soared one over the wall in center to make it 4-0.

Sam Houston State extended its lead with two more runs in the fifth, which proved to be pivotal. Sophomore Brooke Malia singled to begin the inning and freshman Kyndal Kutac reached on a fielder’s choice and an error. Senior Ashley Goetz advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, and sophomore Bailey White made it 5-1 with a fielder’s choice.

Fisher extended the lead to 6-1 with an RBI single to first base.

Senior Lindsey McLeod set a new school record by pitching her 41st consecutive scoreless inning in the first, but the streak ended there. The Cardinals became the first team to score off McLeod since the fourth inning of a 4-3 victory over Nicholls on March 30 when Jenna Bleibe hit a solo home run to center field with one out in the second.

UIW made things dicey in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases with no outs. The Cardinals scored three runs on a pair of singles, but McLeod, who recorded 13 strikeouts, was able to get out of the jam with the winning run batting to improve to 17-7.

Game 2

SHSU 5, UIW 2

Junior Tiffany Thompson and sophomore Brooke Malia started the rally, and sophomore Bailey White put the exclamation point on it to guide the Bearkats to a 5-2 victory over Incarnate Word in game two of a doubleheader Friday at Cardinal Field.

Down 2-0 in the top of the fifth, Thompson ripped a two-run double down the third-base line and Malia followed with a double to left field to put the Bearkats (28-19 overall, 19-4 in SLC) up 3-2. White capped the inning with a two-run blast over the center-field wall, her third of the season, as Sam Houston State extended its winning streak to 12.

The Cardinals struck first in the second inning off starter Regan Dunn. They loaded the bases on a single, hit batter and an error with two outs. Another error and an RBI single put UIW up 2-0.

Dunn settled in after that. She tossed five scoreless innings to close it out and finished with six strikeouts to improve to 8-5.

The Bearkats will try to close out their fourth straight Southland Conference series sweep in the finale Saturday at noon.
