HOUSTON - Three big innings doomed the Sam Houston State softball team in a 17-1 nonconference road loss in five innings to the University of Houston at Cougar Softball Stadium Tuesday evening.

The Cougars (35-16) broke the game open with seven runs on eight hits, including four doubles, in the second inning to snap the Bearkats’ 13-game winning streak. Sam Houston State is now 29-20 on the season.

Sophomore Bailey White accounted for Sam Houston State’s only run with a solo home run to center field in the fourth inning, her fourth of the season. Junior Tiffany Thompson had the Bearkats’ only other hit off Cougar starting pitcher Trystan Melancon (7-4), a single in the third.

Junior Karina Sanchez made her sixth start in the circle this season for Sam Houston State. She lasted only 1 1/3 innings and gave up five earned runs on five hits in the second inning to fall to 1-5.

Freshman Regan Dunn came on in relief in the second inning. She tossed 1 1/3 innings and was tagged for four runs (all in the third inning) on seven hits.

Houston scored six more runs in the fourth off sophomore relievers Annie Bailey and Darby Fitzpatrick.

The Bearkats return home this weekend to host Stephen F. Austin in the final Southland Conference series of the regular season. The teams will play a doubleheader Friday beginning at 4 p.m. at the Bearkat Softball Complex followed by the series finale Saturday at noon.
