SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Helping the Sam Houston State men’s golf team to a third-place tie, senior Camden DeBonis shot a team-low 68 in the final round to finish third overall at the Lone Star Invitational at TPC San Antonio AT&T Oaks Course.
“I am very proud of how our team performed,” head coach Brandt Kieschnick said. “They fought through some really tough conditions with the rain and maintained a great mindset over the last two days. The guys were a little disappointed that they didn’t win, but it’s a positive sign that we competed so well despite not having our best week on the course.”
A strong second round helped the Kats finish with a combined score of 589 – enough to catch Little Rock who led by one stroke yesterday afternoon. Host UTSA claimed the title shooting 578 and Arkansas State trailed closely behind in second with 580. Little Rock and SHSU tied for third, followed by ULM (591) and South Alabama (597), while Texas State and Rice tied for seventh with 599. North Texas (600) and Louisiana (603) were the other two teams to make the top 10.
Marking down a 68 in the final round, DeBonis jumped seven places after shooting four birdies and an eagle on the 17th hole. The veteran from Allen, Texas, picked up back-to-back birdies mid-way through the round and led the field averaging 3.85 on par fours.
Carrying over the momentum from his collegiate debut, freshman Grayson Blunt fired off another 72 round for a final score of 144. His efforts landed him in a three-way tie for fifth in his first tournament with the Kats.
“I am very proud of Camden and Grayson,” Kieschnick added. “Camden had a great tournament and nearly picked up his first college win. We also had great play out of Grayson in his first collegiate tournament and those guys really carried us.”
As a team, the Kats tallied 24 birdies and a tournament-high two eagles. The crew averaged 4.17 strokes on par fours and 5.05 strokes on par fives.
“I think this tournament goes to show that we have a lot of great competitors who can find a way to finish strong,” Kieschnick noted. “I am excited to see how we respond next week in Colorado.”
