COLLEGE STATION, Texas –  Lusine Chobanyan made Sam Houston women’s tennis history by rolling up five singles victories and advancing to the consolation finals of the annual ITA Regional Championships held at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

The junior stands as the first Bearkat to reach the ITA Regionals consolation finals. The only other Sam Houston players to notch more than two singles wins in the tournament have been Anrinette Botha in 2010 (4 wins) and Fabienne Gettwart in 2014 and Giorgia Pozzan in 2018 (both three wins). The ITA Regional features the top players from every NCAA Division I women’s program in Texas. Botha reached the consolation semifinals while Gettwart rolled up main draw victories to reach the round of 16 her freshman season in the fall of 2014. The other two top Sam Houston finishes in the ITA main draw third round appearances by both
Sotnikova and Kuroc in 2007.

Chobanyan defeated players from North Texas, Prairie View A&M, Stephen F. Austin and Texas State before falling 6-2 6-4 to Priya Niezoda from Rice in the consolation championship match.

Sophomores Karla De La Luz Montalvo and Sahaja Yamalapalli highlighted doubles action for the Bearkats by picking up a 6-4 win over UIW’s Victoria Kareh and Brandelyn Fulgenzi. The pair fought valiantly in their next match but fell 6-4 to Rice’s Victoria Smirnova and Anna Botwell, who went on to finish second overall.

Freshman Petra Kaszas and junior Ema Barkovic claimed a 6-3 victory in the opening round of the tournament but ended their run in the next round.

In singles competition, sophomore Roos Gerritsen picked up a 6-2, 6-2 singles victory over Kaja Ljubic of Stephen F. Austin. De La Luz Montalvo earned a close first-round win against Texas State’s Josefina Cassara with a 6-7 7-6 1-0 (7) victory.  De La Luz Montalvo dropped a 7-5, 7-6(4) heartbreaker in the next match.

In other first round singles action Barkovic took down Texas State’s Andrea Fuchs 7-6(9), 6-2 and Kaszas overcame an early deficit to defeat Katherine Jakeway of SMU 4-6 6-0 1-0 (6).

The Bearkats are set to close out the fall season as the host of the Bearkat Invitational on Nov. 3-4. For all the latest information on the Sam Houston State tennis team, visit gobearkats.com or follow @BearkatsWTEN on Twitter.
