COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Led by impressive performances from Lusine Chobanyan, Karla De La Luz Montalvo and Sahaja Yamalapalli, the Sam Houston State tennis team wrapped up a hard-fought run at the ITA Regional tournament at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

After receiving a first-round bye, De La Luz Montalvo and Yamalapalli picked up a 6-4 doubles win over UIW’s Victoria Kareh and Brandelyn Fulgenzi. The pair fought valiantly in their next match but fell 6-4 to Rice’s Victoria Smirnova and Anna Botwell, who went on to finish second overall.

Petra Kaszas and Ema Barkovic claimed a 6-3 win in the opening round of the tournament but ended their run in the next round.

In singles competition, Roos Gerritsen picked up a 6-2, 6-2 match victory over Kaja Ljubic of Stephen F. Austin. De La Luz Montalvo earned a close first-round win against Texas State’s Josefina Cassara. After dropping the first set 6-7, she rebounded and claimed the next two sets 7-6 and 1-0. De La Luz Montalvo dropped a 7-5, 7-6(4) heartbreaker in the next match.

Other Bearkats who earned round-one wins were Kaszas and Barkovic. Barkovic took down Texas State’s Andrea Fuchs 7-6(9), 6-2 and Kaszas overcame an early deficit to win her match 2-1.

Despite dropping her first singles match, Chobanyan bounced back and fought hard for a second-place finish in the consolation bracket. She ran away with 2-0 wins in her first three matches and ground out a tough 2-1 win over Texas State’s Rishona Lewis to advance to the semifinals.  Chobanyan advanced to the consolation championship round but dropped two sets (6-2, 6-4) to finish second.
