HOUSTON – The Sam Houston State tennis team could not pull out its third straight win to open the year as Houston handed the Bearkats a 5-2 loss on Friday afternoon at the Winston Tennis Facility.
The Cougars (2-1) were coming off a top-75 ranking from a year ago and took the doubles point from the Bearkats (2-1) before taking four of the six singles points.
“We showed our youth today when we were unable to stay disciplined with leads at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles and in some of our singles play,” Sam Houston head coach Rob Hubbard said after the match. “We battled back after very slow starts in the first sets of singles, with the exception of No. 5, and had an opportunity to pull out a couple more matches but came up short.”
Sam Houston scored its two points by virtue of wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. The Cougars had already clinched the match before the Kats got on the board, thanks to taking the doubles point and with victories on the Nos. 1, 6 and 2 courts.
But Karla De La Luz Montalvo got the Bearkats on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Jovana Vukovic at No. 4 before Isidora Zivkoviv came back from dropping the first set to take each of the next two sets for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Sophie Gerits.
“Very proud of our effort but our youth showed today. We’ll get back at it and see if we can’t improve upon today’s lessons for the Rice match,” Hubbard said.
The Kats will head back to Houston on Sunday for a noon match with the Rice Owls at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
