HOUSTON – The Sam Houston State Bearkat tennis team picked up a singles point, but nothing else as a tough Rice Owl squad picked up a 6-1 win on Sunday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Roos Gerritsen was the lone Bearkat (2-2) to register a victory on the day, winning at No. 6 singles by a 6-4, 1-6, 20-4 score over Diae El Jardi to salvage the only SHSU point of the day. Rice (2-1), who already owns a win over Lamar and lost 4-3 at Baylor on Monday, raced out to an early lead after sweeping the doubles point and then took each of the first five singles points.
“I felt we played better overall than Friday as we raised our level of play,” Bearkat head coach Rob Hubbard said. “But in the end, we seemed to tire mentally in a number of the matches.”
Ema Barkovic nearly picked up a point for the Kats on the No. 2 singles court, forcing a deciding third set before falling to Victoria Smirnova by a 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 10-2 margin. Sahaja Yamalapalli had a chance to pick up a win on the top court and took the first set over Rice’s No. 1 player, Michaela Haet, before falling 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
“We left several opportunities on the table today against another nationally ranked program that hopefully we can rectify in future matches.”
The Bearkats will now return home for a Friday match vs UTSA on February 1 before four straight matches on the road leading up to the conference opener vs Nicholls on March 1.
