CORPUS CHRISTI - The Sam Houston State women’s tennis team picked up a key road win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday at the Henry Tennis Center.


The Bearkats (11-4 overall, 5-1 in SLC) topped the defending league co-champions 4-3 to pick up their eighth win in their last nine dual matches. Sam Houston currently stands third in SLC action behind Abilene Christian (5-0) and Northwestern State (5-0).


Sahaja Yamalapalli, Isidora Zivkovic and Lusine Chobanyan all won in straight sets for the Bearkats in singles action. Yamalapalli has now won nine straight singles matches and is a perfect 6-0 in league play.


In doubles action, the duo of Lusine Chobanyan and Roos Gerritsen and the team of DeLaLuz Montalvo and Petra Kaszas both posted victories to help Sam Houston win doubles play.


The win was the Bearkats first over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi since 2009.


Sam Houston stays on the road for another conference match against Lamar (1-4 in SLC) at 2 p.m. Sunday in Beaumont at the Thompson Tennis Center.
