SOUTHEASTERN, La. - The Sam Houston State women’s tennis team clinched a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament with a 6-1 victory over Southeastern Louisiana Friday at the SLU Tennis Complex.
In singles competition, freshman Isidora Zivkovic defeated Vicky Scholz 6-4, 6-3, and sophomore Karla De La Luz Montalvo took down Bernadette Dornieden 6-4, 6-2. Junior Lusine Chobanyan topped Flory Bierma 6-1, 7-5, and sophomore Roos Gerritsen defeated Himani Mor 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman Petra Kaszas also picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Katya Cornejo in No. 6 singles.
The Bearkats won the doubles point for their third straight match.
Chobanyan and Gerritsen defeated Putri Insani and Ximena Yanez 6-2. Sophomore Sahaja Yamalapalli, who lost her first conference match in No. 1 singles against the Lions, teamed with Zivkovic to beat Ceci Mercier and Scholz 6-3.
Sam Houston State improved to 13-6 overall and 7-3 in league play, while Southeastern Louisiana fell to 6-11 and 3-6.
The Bearkats close out the regular season with a 1 p.m. match Sunday against McNeese in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
