Volleyball wins in four sets

Huntsville - Carli Kolbe totaled 14 kills and 18 points to lead Sam Houston in a 25-20 22-25 25-20 25-21 victory over Northwestern State Saturday afternoon at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

The victory keeps the Bearkats unbeaten in Southland Conference action as Sam Houston leads the league with a 3-0 lead. SHSU stands 9-7 for the year while Northwestern State dropped to 3-12 for the season and 0-3 in Southland action.

Stacey DiFrancesco led the Demons with 20 kills. Kelly Jimenez added 12.

Haley Neisler totaled eight kills and Kaylee Hawkins added six for the Bearkats. Both teams totaled 46 kills. Sam Houston's front line produced 10 blocks as Neisler assisted on five and Kim Black and Kolbe each had a hand in four.

Sam Houston never trailed in the first set, totaling 10 kills and 14 points on side-outs. But the Demons roared back to build a big early lead and hold off the Kats for a 25-22 second set win.

Both the third and fourth sets were tight battles with nine ties and three lead changes. Sam Houston took advantage of outstanding serving with a team total of seven aces. Black, Kolbe and Hawkins each accounted for two of the aces.
