Despite three Bearkats totaling double figure kills, Sam Houston State dropped its second Southland Conference volleyball match falling in five sets to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday afternoon.

The Islanders won 25-22 21-25 20-25 25-21 15-11.

Kaylee Hawkins led SHSU with 16 kills while Haley Neisler and Kim Black each totaled 12. Carli Kolbe was responsible for nine kills.

The match was a see-saw affair with momentum changing back and forth

After trailing by as many as five points, the Islanders rallied to tie 22-22 and win the next three points to earn the set victory.

Sam Houston bounced back, jumping out to a 12-4 lead and never trailing as the Kats evened the match with a 25-21 second set win.

The third set was a battle with five ties, the last at 17-17. Sam Houston broke the tied on a Kolbe kill and won eight of the next 10 points to go up two sets to one.

A&M-Corpus Christi forced a fifth set, taking over at 21-21 to win four straight points.

Sam Houston held a 6-4 led in the fifth set but the Islanders roared back to win nine of the last 14 points and earn the match victory.

A&M-Corpus Christi upped its season mark to 9-10 and now stand 1-3 in Southland Conference play. Sam Houston fell to 9-9 for the year and 3-2 in league action.

Hawkins totaled 25 digs and Christine Alfaro totaled 21. Kym Loving totaled 47 assists and 12 digs.

Sam Houston returns to Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum to play host to Stephen F. Austin Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
