Led by Carli Kolbe who totaled 18 kills, Sam Houston dispatched Southeastern Louisiana 25-15 25-13 25-19 in one hour and six minutes for a Southland Conference volleyball victory Saturday afternoon at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
Sam Houston (13-10, SLC 7-3) totaled 44 kills in 95 attempts with only 17 errors for a .284 hitting percentage. Kim Black added nine kills.
Southeastern Louisiana (4-23, SLC 0-13) was led by Paige Dollison with seven kills.
The Bearkats were hot at the service line with 11 aces. Kym Loving had four aces to lead the team and Kolbe had three aces on three consecutive points in the third set.
The Kat defense also recorded six total blocks including three by Haley Neisler. Loving assisted on 35 of the Bearkats' 44 points. Jamie Haas totaled 13 digs and Hawkins added 10.
After losing the opening point of the match, Sam Houston went on a 13-2 run to build a 10-point lead. The Lions never got closer than eight points, 16-8, the rest of the way as the Kats totaled 15 kills in 30 attempts on won nine of their 16 side-out points are a 25-15 set win.
The second set was tied four times, the last at 13-13. But Kaylee Hawkins put away a kill and then served out the second set as the Kats won 12 straight points for a 25-13 set victory. Sam Houston totaled 17 kills in the set and won six of their 13 side-outs.
The two teams were tied three times in the final set, the last at 5-5. The Lions cut the margin to 21-17 but Sam Houston closed out the match winning four of the final six points.
Sam Houston now heads on the road, traveling to UT-Arlington Thursday Oct. 27 and Texas State Saturday October 29. The Bearkats will wrap up their 2011 regular season home schedule on Thursday and Saturday November 3 and 5 will contests against UTSA and A&M-Corpus Christi.
