SAN ANTONIO – Taylor Cunningham reached a career milestone, but the rest of the Sam Houston State Bearkats could not get much going on Thursday night as Incarnate Word put an end to Sam Houston’s six-match win streak with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 27-25) win at the McDermott Center.

Cunningham, who was just named the SLC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, hit .294 with 15 kills on 34 swings and added another 10 digs and five blocks; however, no other Bearkat (10-5, 2-1 SLC) finished with more than Caroline Sheaff’s five scores as Sam Houston hit just .139 for the night.

With her kill total, Cunningham surpassed the 1,000-kill mark for her career and became the 23rd Bearkat in program history and the third in the last two years to reach the total.

She had eight kills in the first set, but the Kats hit just .028 in that frame with 10 total kills while being outkilled by the Cardinals (4-10, 2-2 SLC) 49-33. The Kats entered the match leading the league in opponent’s attack percentage, but had little answer throughout the night for UIW who finished with a .297 mark after coming in to the night hitting just .191 for the year.

For the Kats, Jaclyn Ward had 21 of the team’s 29 assists and Madison Wallace joined Cunningham in double figure digs with 10. Meanwhile, UIW was led by Bethany Clapp’s 18 kills with Autumn Lockley adding 13 more.

Sam Houston will have more than a week before a chance to rebound with its next match set for Saturday, Oct. 6 at home against Abilene Christian.
