San Marcos - Issac Nuti's two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning power Texas State past Sam Houston Friday night as the Bobcats won 6-3 in the opening contest of a three-game Southland Conference baseball series.

Sam Houston took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Greg Olson tripled, then scored as Ryan Mooney was safe on an infield error. Kevin Miller's single scored Mooney to give the Kats a 2-0 lead.

Texas State tallied a run in both the second and third innings then took a 3-2 leader on a run-scoring double by Jeff McVaney in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Sam Houston tied the game 3-3 in the top of the eighth inning on Daniel Nottebart's RBI single. Nottebart led Sam Houston at the plate, going 3-for-4 for the night.

Nuti's double and an RBI single by Bret Atwood gave Texas State a three-run lead in the bottom of the eight.

Matt Shelton struck out 10 Bobcat batters in six innings as the Bearkats' starter. Michael Oros took the loss in relief.

Sam Houston out-hit Texas State 13-9. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Bearkats as they fell to 12-6 for the season and 1-3 in Southland Conference action. Texas State stands 13-4 for the year.

Sam Houston and Texas State will meet in the second game of the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
