Houston - Sam Houston took a 6-2 lead after four-and-a-half innings but saw it evaporate as Texas Southern battled back for an 8-6 non-conference baseball victory over the Bearkats Tuesday at MacGregor Park.

The loss ended a six-game winning streak for Sam Houston as the Kats fell to 26-13 for the season. Texas Southern, which out-hit SHSU eight to seven, upped its overall record to 16-21.

Outfielder Mark Hudson and catcher Doug Oney each hit home runs to give Sam Houston a strong start. Hudson produced an RBI single in a two-run first inning and hit a solo home run to left center in the fifth inning.

Oney blasted a three-run homer in the fourth inning.

The winning blow for Texas Southern came on a three-run homer by Chris Logan in the sixth inning. Down four runs, the Tigers scored two runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth to earn the victory.

Sam Houston used five pitchers on the mound. Cody Dickson gave up only two hits in the first three innings. Brent Powers, Matt Walker, Jordan Westra and Paul Spinn also pitched. Westra took the loss, giving up four runs in the sixth inning.

Doug Williams was the game winner and Brad Smith earned the save.

Sam Houston returns to Southland Conference action beginning Thursday as the Bearkats begin a three-game series with Nicholls in Thibodaux, La.
