The Bearkats used a big seventh inning and a solid performance from the pitching staff to extend their winning streak to 13 games on Friday with a 6-2 win over Lamar at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Caleb Smith (5-2) got the win for the Kats going 6 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out six.

Jake Arrington led the Kats at the plate with two hits while driving in three. Jesse Plumlee and Corey Toupes also drove in runs for No. 20 Sam Houston, which also extended its Southland Conference winning streak to 11 games.

The Kats (24-9, 14-2) got on the board first, plating a run in the top of the second inning. John Hale singled with one out and moved to third on a single by Plumlee. He scored a hitter later on a groundout by Toupes.

Lamar answered right back to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning and took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. They didn’t hold it long, however. Arrington led off the sixth with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hale. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Plumlee.

The Bearkats bat finally broke out in the bottom of the seventh. Luke Plucheck got things going with a one-out, infield single. Anthony Azar singled and with two outs Kevin Miller walked to load the bases. Arrington them delivered a bases clearing double to put the Kats up 5-2.

After Michael Oros pitched two innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits, the Bearkats added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. As it turned out, the Kats didn’t need it. Michael Burchette came on in the night to shut down the Cardinals in order.

Game two of the series is Saturday at 2 p.m.
